Digital natives and immigrants

Tuesday, November 14th, 2006

Sebastian insa, care e nascut in 2003, e un nativ in lumea digitala. Se joaca cu racing cars, incarca environments in YM, scrie in Word si deseneaza in paint. Si stie exact ce trebuie sa scriu in browser: mickeymouse.com.

But our internet site will have to do still more to be competitive. For some, it may have to become the place for conversation. The digital native doesn’t send a letter to the editor anymore. She goes online, and starts a blog. We need to be the destination for those bloggers. We need to encourage readers to think of the web as the place to go to engage our reporters and editors in more extended discussions about the way a particular story was reported or researched or presented.

These kids have been socially conditioned in a universe that runs parallel to the one inhabited by most folks in the media business. They’ve been playing computer games of mind-blowing complexity forever. They’re resourceful, knowledgeable and natural users of computer and communications technology. They’re Digital Natives – accustomed to creating content of their own – and publishing it. (Remember the motto of YouTube: ‘Broadcast yourself!’)

They buy music from the iTunes store – but continue to download tracks illicitly as well. They use BitTorrent to get US editions of Lost. They think ‘Google’ is a synonym for ‘research’ and regard it as quite normal to maintain and read blogs (55 million as of last night), use Skype to talk to their mates and upload photos to Flickr. Some even write entries on Wikipedia. And they know how to use iMovie or Adobe Premiere to edit videos and upload them to YouTube.

Now look round the average British newsroom. How many hacks have a Flickr account or a MySpace profile? How many sub-editors have ever uploaded a video to YouTube? How many editors have used BitTorrent? (How many know what BitTorrent is?)

And while some of our teenagers’ interests coincide with ours, many do not. Here, for example, are the top blog tags on Technorati last night: Bush, careers, college, comedy, Congress, death, Democrats, elections, Flickr, gay, Halloween, Iraq, Microsoft, money, Republicans, Saddam, Ted Haggard, vote, war, breaking-news, tagshare, YouTube. Some you’ll recognise. But you won’t see much about many of these in the papers.

Mie imi mai place si “Ability to learn new technology”.

  • Sa monitorizeze comentariile publicate de BBC la categoria “Have your say” (pe News Sniffer a devenit “Watch Your Mouth)

This article is from ‘bbc‘, was first published or seen on Mon Oct 09 14:00:07 BST 2006 and has 2 versions.

Israelis kill Palestinian in Gaza

Two Palestinians killed by Israel

Mon Oct 09 18:30:22 BST 2006

The Israeli army has killed a Palestinian in farmland in the northern Gaza Strip, an area used by militants for firing rockets at Israel. The Israeli army has killed two Palestinians in separate incidents in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.
Palestinian officials named the person killed as Mahmoud Abu Nasser. It was not initially clear if he was a militant or civilian. Palestinian medics said a 14-year-old boy was killed in northern Gaza. Israel said it killed a Palestinian retrieving a rocket launcher.
Five others were wounded in the strike, the Palestinian officials said. In the second incident, Israeli forces shot dead a Palestinian they said was trying to stab them at a checkpoint close to the West Bank city of Nablus.
The army said it had attacked a “man who came to collect a launcher” after a rocket had fired been at Israel. But Palestinian witnesses said the 20-year-old victim was unarmed.
A hospital medic quoted by Reuters news agency put Abu Nasser’s age at 14. Israel launched an offensive against militants in Gaza after Palestinian gunmen seized a soldier in a cross-border raid from the strip on June 25.
Israel launched an offensive in Gaza after Palestinian militants seized a soldier in a cross-border raid on 25 June. Around 225 Palestinians, half of them civilians, have been killed in the offensive in the impoverished strip.
About 225 Palestinians, half of them civilians, have been killed in sustained Israeli raids. Israel has also been carrying out military strikes to try to stop gunmen firing homemade rockets at Israeli towns and villages near the border with Gaza.

Si care e sursa stirii? Acelasi Editors Blog de la BBC. Cum BBC-ul e una dintre principalele tinte ale News Sniffer, Steve Herrmann, editor pe BBC news isi apara patria si spune ca nu exista “stealth editing” si nici alte  asemenea operatiuni murdare de presa. Cat despre  cenzura de la Have your say, va las sa  savurati:

I haven’t said anything about the tracking of the Have Your Say pages on News Sniffer because, at the moment, we think their tracking is not working properly and is highlighting comments as “censored” which are, in fact, published and live on the Have your Say pages. We are in touch with the architect of News Sniffer to see whether and how this can be fixed.

Ladies and debutantes

Thursday, October 19th, 2006

Dupa cum spun chiar producatorii, in termeni pe care va las sa-i admirati:

During the course the young women will learn deportment, elocution, floristry, dressmaking and sexual etiquette,[...]

Cum scria Sam in cronica TV in G2 (Guardian), unde le-au gasit frate??

Acum e ultima saptamana si cele 3 finaliste se pregatesc cu cartea pe cap si creionul in gura (“rain in spain stays mostly on the…”) pentru “Debutantes ball”. Cool.
